Samplers are digital instruments that use segments of audio recordings (‘samples’) which are then triggered by the performer. This is achieved by accessing the device’s library of internal samples or by recording and capturing bits of audio that can be made into custom samples. Samplers either have built-in internal memory, support external media storage (the earliest models used tape storage and floppy disks, while modern samplers use SD-cards or flash media) or a combination of the two. Assign samples to the touchpad buttons through the device’s interface and you’re ready to get started!

Many of today’s hardware samplers have also been expanded to serve as both sequencers and drum machines – a sort of all-in-one package. This means they are designed to be used as total production centers, complete with their own built-in software operating systems. The most powerful models are great foundation pieces for hardware-only live performance rigs. That means you can construct beats, grooves, soundscapes, and even entire tracks without needing turntables, media players, or a laptop. Manipulate single samples by slicing, reversing, tweaking frequencies, using filters, and adding effects like reverb, delay, bitcrush, compression, and much more. With the proper practice, you can quickly cycle through all of your options and cue up whatever you need – these devices are ready to take things as far as your imagination is willing to go!
Samplers also make a wonderful addition to any existing DJ setup. Modern DJ hardware includes auxiliary ports for other external gear. This is a great way to include additional sounds on top of existing tracks. Sampler connectivity options can include XLR or 1/4” inputs and outputs, USB (to sync with a computer for imports, exports, and downloads), and MIDI. If the device is equipped with MIDI ports, it can be synced with another MIDI-capable device to combine forces. The sonic information from the one hardware piece (a hardware synth, another drum machine, a keyboard MIDI controller connected to a computer are possibilities) can be routed into another.
