Gear is subjective. You can read reviews and spec sheets until your eyes cross, but you’ll never truly know if a piece of music gear is right for you until you put your hands on it. While shopping for products on the internet is definitely better than actually interacting with people in the real world… it does pose some limitations for trying out gear. That’s why AMS offers an industry-best return policy.
When you buy a piece of music gear from AMS, you get a full 45 DAYS from the shipping date to try it out — which is more than the “other guys” offer. Play it at home, take it to gigs, and see how it holds up to your musical lifestyle. If you find that an item can’t keep up, just send it back! No questions asked.
You can either return the product for a full refund or exchange it for credit to find something that might work better. The super-amazing 45-day return policy also works with the AMS Lowest Price Guarantee.
We don’t want to just sell gear; we want to sell the right gear — even if it takes a few tries.
It’s easy to send a product back to AMS. There are three ways you can take advantage of the 45-day money-back guarantee:
When you get your Electronic Return Label, just print it out, pop the product (along with its packaging) in a box, and stick on the return label. Then, just follow the easy carrier instructions to get the gear back to us in the warehouse. Once received and processed, we’ll issue your refund and you can purchase your next piece of music gear.
I know… There’s always fine print. But there are a few exceptions to the AMS 45-day money-back guarantee.
Exception #1: We can’t accept returns for personal items that have been used in the ear or mouth, like in-ear monitors, guitar talk boxes, harmonicas, and gear like that. It’s gross; we can’t resell it.
Exception #2: All returns must be in their original packaging with any paperwork, warranty cards, or owner’s manuals, and the AMS shrinkwrap and barcode still affixed. That way we know it’s still in good condition. And speaking of which…
Exception #3: Items must show no signs of wear or abuse. Otherwise, you may be charged a restocking fee.
Exception #4: Copyrighted materials cannot be returned once they’re opened. Items like books, videotapes, DVDs, sample libraries, style disks, sound expansion boards, and software (including software bundled with hardware) can’t be returned. You never know who made copies… This also includes blank media like CDs, removable memory cards, and hard drives. If you have any questions about software compatibility or version, please call the AMS Gear Experts before purchasing.
Exception #5: We can’t accept returns on disposable products once they’re opened. These are things like cleaning and care products.
Exception #6: You can’t return individual parts once they’ve been opened. Things like guitar parts, amp parts, and turntable parts. They could have been swapped with defective parts and returned.
Exception #7: If we find that a returned recording device has a lot of content saved to it, we will charge a 15% minimum restocking fee or refuse the return due to excessive use.
Exception #8: AMS Gift Certificates can’t be returned.
And while AMS does have the industry’s best return policy, there are those who try to take advantage of it. Customers who continually return items (not including due to circumstances out of their control like product defects) may be subject to account closure.
We offer the industry-leading 45-day return policy to ensure you get the perfect gear for your needs. It’s not intended to be a way to play with gear for free.

There are a few rules when it comes to exchanges to make sure the process moves smoothly:
If you’re returning a product because of damage, defect, or our mistake (we’re human!), we’ll cover the shipping charges for both getting the product to our warehouse and sending you a return product. There’s nothing worse than being excited to receive a product and finding it damaged when you open the box. Of course we’ll take care of the shipping to get it fixed!
However, if you’re returning a product because you don’t like or it’s not right for what you need, we do ask that you cover the costs to ship the product back to AMS. This is simply to ensure you’re serious about the return. We can get you a discounted return label for your product if you call AMS Customer Service. The cost of shipping can be deducted from your return reimbursement once the product has been received and processed.
International customers, as well as customers in Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, APO/FPO, and other U.S. Territories, will be responsible for return shipping costs on any returning order. Return labels or call tags cannot be issued by American Musical Supply for customers in these areas.
Once we receive the product in the warehouse, it typically takes between 3-5 business days (Monday through Friday) for the return to process and an additional 5-7 business days for you to see the credit back on your account.
Please note that if you are returning items on a payment plan and have kept other items on that same payment plan, the refund will be issued toward the remaining balance on that payment plan. If you’re returning all items on the payment plan or if the order was paid in full, the refund will be issued back to the payment method used for the order.
If you submitted your order via PayPal, please note that the refund may take up to 7-10 business days to arrive back to your PayPal account.
Processing times may vary depending on daily return volume. It could exceed 3-5 business days during January (typically our busiest month) and other times during the year when we are exceptionally busy.
We do our best to completely avoid restocking fees — and they’re rare.
We only charge restocking fees if the returned item shows signs of wear and tear that wasn’t on the product when you received it or if it’s missing any included parts or accessories (including warranty cards, owner’s manuals, etc.). Basically, anything that may prevent us from reselling the product will result in a minimum 15% restocking fee.
We do also ask that all items are returned with their original packaging, including inner and outer packaging, along with the complete original AMS barcode on the box. We have to charge an additional $25 if we receive a product that doesn’t have its original packaging. When you open your product, just stick all the packaging in a closet. You can throw it away after 45 days of testing your new equipment!
At AMS, we strive to have the lowest prices around. But occasionally, someone will beat us to the punch. And to that we say we want to punch their punch even harder!
