The SG Junior has always been a study in simplicity—stripped down, straight to the point, and full of attitude. This 1963 SG Junior Reissue, part of the Gibson Custom Shop’s Limited Edition Collection, captures that raw energy with stunning accuracy and vintage character. Inspired by years of Made to Measure requests and the creativity of the artisans of the Gibson Custom Shop in Nashville, this limited-run model brings one of our most beloved single-pickup guitars back to life with period-correct detail and unmistakable style.
Crafted from solid mahogany and finished in a Murphy Lab Light Aged Vintage Sunburst nitrocellulose lacquer, the body has the kind of subtle checking, fading, and wear that usually takes decades to develop. The result is a guitar that looks and feels like a well-loved original, with the resonance and response to match.
The neck is carved to the Authentic 1961 Thin D Shape profile and joined with a long neck tenon for added sustain and stability. A rosewood fretboard with celluloid dot inlays, medium jumbo frets, and a 12-inch radius offers a smooth, familiar playing surface, while the 24.75-inch scale length and nylon nut contribute to the guitar’s warm, articulate tone.
At the heart of the SG Junior’s voice is a single Dogear P-90 pickup in the bridge position—bright, punchy, and unapologetically bold. Paired with a simple master volume and tone control layout that utilizes high-quality audio taper CTS potentiometers, it delivers everything from articulate, clean chime and snarling rock rhythm tones to sweet, singing leads with just a twist of the knobs.
Vintage-correct hardware includes a Lightning Bar wraparound bridge, Kluson three-on-a-plate tuners with white buttons, and gold Top Hat knobs with silver inserts. Black plastic parts and a black pickguard complete the look, staying true to the original aesthetic.
Each guitar ships in a period-correct reissue hardshell case and is built in extremely limited numbers as part of the Limited Edition Collection—a celebration of the most iconic and requested instruments to come through the Gibson Custom Shop.
