Shure gear absolutely rocks, and that’s truth, because Shure has literally been around since before rock was even a thing. I mean, technically, that means Shure rocks more than “rock and roll” has actually rocked!
Shure has put out so many great products, and now it’s my job to put out a list of the best. It’s going to be difficult, and there are so many things that are unfortunately going to be left off, but those are the breaks.
The criteria for my rankings is a combination of performance, functionality, and use applications, with considerations on affordability as well — all driven by my personal experience. Sure, a $1,500 piece is going to technically be “better” than a $100 one, but there’s a good chance you would only use the more expensive piece in a unique, curated environment or niche situation, which in this writer’s opinion makes it more a luxury rather than one of the overall best options.
And to the other professional sound engineers and performers out there, always remember the “general opinion of writing on the internet” disclaimer. This is my list, it may be different than yours, and that’s totally okay!
And now with no further delay, let’s get on our way!
Shure SM57 Dynamic Instrument Microphone
The top spot may be a surprise to some, but I guarantee that fellow performers and sound engineers in all different walks of musical life are nodding their heads in agreement. The SM57 has it all: It’s steady, extremely versatile, durable, price-friendly, and used everywhere from all the way to the top professional studio. Use it on guitar and bass cabinets, snare drums, toms, woodwind and brass instruments, and a host of other instruments. It’s always helpful to have an extra SM57 or two in the collection!
Shure SM58 Dynamic Vocal Microphone
The well-loved and battle-hardened SM58 is a true symbol of the performance stage. From local open mic nights and small stage performances to the biggest of the big time, the SM58 is always along for the ride. You simply can’t deny its impact. Straightforward, sonically neutral, and a solid fit for vocals, spoken word, presentations, and everything in-between, the SM58 is everywhere for a reason!
Shure SM7B Broadcast Vocal Microphone
Podcasters, streamers, creators, and vocalists everywhere agree, the Shure SM7B is the definition of a mainstay and is one of the industry standards. Enjoy clean, welcoming, and buttery-smooth vocals that add a consummate feeling of professionalism to your creations.
As a bonus alternative, the newer Shure SM7dB has a built-in preamp that can add a hefty extra boost of clean gain to the signal.
Shure Beta 91A Condenser Boundary Microphone
Get ready to kick the BOOM BAP up to a whole new level! This handy condenser mic is one of the most popular options for mic’ing a kick drum. It also has slots on the bottom so it can be mounted to a variety of surfaces.
If you’re looking for an alternative or supplemental addition to hanging overhead mics for live stage theatre, public address, or a corporate conference room, the Beta 91A is an excellent choice!
Shure PSM300 In-Ear Monitor System
A rule of thumb for stage monitoring is the closer you are physically to the mix source, the more control you can have over the volume to help keep down on the stage noise while still hearing yourself clearly. With an in-ear system, you can’t get any closer than directly inside your ear! That means you can keep the volume you’re exposed to much more manageable while also dialing in your monitor mix to your exact liking,
Shure in-ears are incredibly popular, and the PSM300 is a beast — enjoy plenty of range and freedom on stage, all with a sound that comes in crystal-clear.
Shure SM81 Instrument Condenser Microphone
For me, this one is a true wild card: one of those “get an accurate sound of the thing you are pointing it towards” kind of mic!
The SM81 is a wonderful bang-for-your-buck condenser that shows off plenty of detail for all sorts of acoustic instruments. A pair of these also makes for very nice drum overheads or as a general group mic’ing solution for something like an ensemble of singers.
Shure Beta 58A Dynamic Vocal Microphone
The Shure Beta 58A supercardioid mic is a favorite of among vocalists for that classic Shure sound, focused mids and clear high frequencies, and plenty of feedback rejection when you’re on a crowded stage with more stage monitor sound. It’s a very nice mic for performers who are more comfortable being way up on the mic.
Shure SLX-D Series Wireless Microphone Systems
When bands and audio engineering operations come rolling in with handheld mics, lavaliers, and headworn microphones, you can bet they’re likely to be rocking a Shure wireless system!
With wireless, reliability and consistent clear sound without dropouts is key, but you’ll often hear people claim that you need the flagship model without paying any concern to the price point. In my opinion, the SLX-D series is an incredibly solid professional offering that’s super steady and works great for performers, groups, and small/medium venues that need a couple of channels.
Plus, you have the ability to choose a handheld mic capsule (SM58, Beta 58A, KSM8, and more) that suits you.
Shure MV7+ USB / XLR Microphone
The Shure MV7+ dynamic mic is a true recording plug-and-play, built for creators who are looking for both the quality of a top-end broadcast mic with the convenience of standalone controls and easy connectivity that you see with modern USB mics. The result has translated into plenty of positive acclaim!
When it comes to these types of rankings, the newest groundbreaking addition to the lineup is going to start a bit lower on the list. Sometimes you have to earn your place over the incumbent icons. Will this model leapfrog some of the other offerings here? Only time will tell.
