The Official Live Sound Gift Guide [2025]

What should you get for the musicians and creators who constantly think about gear? It’s a question as old as music gear itself. And there are so many options out there that it’s nearly impossible to sort through — especially if you don’t know what you’re looking for…

Luckily, AMS is the place to spread cheer with great live sound gear! We’re your stop for commanding PA speakers, subwoofers, mixers, microphones, signal processing, and much, much more. So here are some of the best gifts in live sound, complete with a few specific ideas that I personally recommend. These gifts cover the whole spectrum of application and price, so be sure to check out the whole list for lots of options to consider.

Speakers and Subwoofers

We’re going big right out of the gate! If a performer, DJ, or band is looking to run their own setup, or expand on their existing one, there’s a good chance they’re looking at PA speakers.

As for size and configuration, it all depends on what they plan to do and where they plan to do it. If the plan is to stay in smaller venues and performance spaces, 10- and 12-inch main PA speakers and 15-inch subwoofers, as well as all-in-one powered line array systems would be suitable.

If it’s all about going really big, then 15-inch mains and either 18-inch or dual 18-inch subwoofers are going to have the power to cover plenty of interior square footage and outdoor spaces.

Gift Idea #1: Electro-Voice ZLX-G2 12” Powered Loudspeaker

If you’re looking for a pair of powerful and versatile speakers that are price-friendly, I highly recommend the 12” Electro Voice ZLX-G2 powered speakers from Electro-Voice.

These pump out plenty of sound and are ready to cover all your audio needs in small- and medium-sized spaces. Use them with a standard mixing console or DJ controller, or go standalone — the ZLX-G2 has three input channels so you can connect mics, instruments, (one channel has a Hi-Z input for guitar), and even cue up Bluetooth-enabled devices directly to the speaker!

Gift Idea #2: QSC KS118 18” Subwoofer

This is the “Go Big or Go Home” moment! If the musician on your list has been seriously talking about upgrading their live sound setup, and they really, really want to add some bottom end, then the QSC KS118 is the way to go.

Yes, it’s one of the pricier models, but QSC doesn’t mess around. This a serious investment in some serious bass. One of these subs will go a long, long way for bands and DJs. And with two of them in a setup, the music is sure to be unforgettable experience with plenty of BOOM!

Battery-Powered PA Speakers

If you overhear an enthusiastic creative talking about wanting to add an extra layer of portability and freedom to their sound setup, you absolutely should look into battery-powered PA speakers — or maybe even the newest battery-powered complete PA line array systems!

These are very easy to deploy, can cover quick and easy applications (like couple of presenters in need of an extra boost), and can even have features like built-in Bluetooth audio connectivity and mixers for multiple device inputs and management.

Gift Idea #1: Bose S1 Pro +

When you need to bring sound anywhere, the Bose S1 Pro+ is ready to answer the call. Lightweight, quick to transport, and built to Bose’s highest standards of engineering, the S1 Pro+ as convenient as they come!

Singer-songwriters can use them for quick concerts, they can serve as an extra personal monitor for performers, and you can bump the tunes for any party. They’re good for just about any application.

Gift Idea #2: Electro Voice EVERSE 12” Battery Powered Loudspeaker

The new EVERSE models from Electro-Voice are incredibly popular and pack a punch! There are even offerings that have 12-inch speakers inside, which is the standard for many setups!

Long battery life, plenty of connectivity, and serious power that plays up to the same standards as EV’s dominant lineup of wired speakers — this is a winner through and through!

Storage and Transport Equipment

Cases and padded bags are incredibly important for keeping equipment in good working order. You could be the most careful person in the room, but all it takes it one slip, one bump, or one rowdy individual who means well trying to “help” for an unsecured item to take a serious hit or fall. And as you take part in more gigs you take, the chance of those one-off accidents goes up and up until it’s practically inevitable.

Storage and transport equipment make the kinds of gifts that people don’t like to buy for themselves, because let’s face it, the new equipment and flashy tech is more exciting. But they will realize the value, thank you profusely, and enjoy peace of mind when they’re transporting and housing everything.

Do a little bit research into what your favorite person uses and help protect the gear that keeps their operation running at full speed.

Gift Idea #1 - Gator All-Terrain Utility Cart

We like to picture all those big, impressive speakers, consoles, and hardware pieces when they’re in use, pumping out plenty of sound and helping to run the whole operation. But it can be easy to overlook just how cumbersome they are when it’s time to transport, set up, and tear down. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve come a looooong way from those heavy monstrosities from the 1980s that pretty much needed heavy machinery to move, but even with today’s slimmed down models it can still be a lot!

The Gator All-Terrain Utility Cart is a great way for musicians to work smarter, not harder! Minimize lifting and save backs and bodies by giving the gift of a steady set of wheels to transport everything. They support plenty of weight and then break down easily to fit inside a vehicle or trailer.

Running sound shouldn’t be a “World’s Strongest Person” event where people struggle to carry heavy subwoofers for long distances. And don’t even get me started on the number of times I was told beforehand that I could unload right next to the performance area, only to find out later that no, I could not and had to park my vehicle blocks away. A rolling cart is the gift for live performers that they never knew they needed and will thank you for once it saves them from an impromptu lifting workout.

Gift Idea #2 - MONO M80 Classic FlyBy Ultra Backpack Black

This 2-in-1 backpack from MONO Cases is stylish and has plenty of capacity! Anyone working with sound equipment is going to also need plenty of organization for the more sensitive pieces of equipment and smaller accessories like controllers, laptops, tablets, portable power banks, notebooks, as well as all the cables, adapters, and other essentials.

These are the tools that need to be close at hand, and being able to sling this pack over your shoulder with everything is one spot will definitely bring peace of mind.

Signal Processing

Mixer, Main PA speakers, Microphones, and Monitors. With sound, the 4 Ms get the largest share of the attention, but there is so much more that goes beyond to take the finished product to a whole new level.

Signal processers aren’t just for the studio. The right mix of equipment can be loaded up into a convenient rack case and brought to live performances. Rackmount mic preamps, mic splitters, audio compressors, EQ, and reverb and delay units are important to accompany analog mixers especially but can also add extra polish to the main mix, group mix, or individual track mixes on a digital setup!

Gift Idea #1: dbx 266xs Dual Channel Compressor, Limiter, and Gate

Incredibly expensive vintage compressors are hot right now, and it’s no surprise. But those devices (and the modern boutique models that emulate them) start at thousands of dollars and just go up for there.

Enter the dbx 266xs, an awesome price-friendly model that’s meant for live audio! This is a wonderful partner for smaller analog mixers or models that don’t have built-in compressors. Simply connect it to a mixer’s inserts with one of these handy Y-cables, and BOOM, you have that extra layer of control to help smooth out extreme peaks in signal. And since the dbx 266xs has two channels, you can choose a combination of individual channels, busses, or even the overall left-right stereo mix!

Gift Idea #2: ART S83Way Eight Channel Three Way Microphone Splitter

The ART S83Way is a great eight channel mic splitter that gives you up to two copies of each signal. First connect your mics to its inputs, and then using XLR splitters, send one output to the main mixer and up to two additional output sources that can go elsewhere — such as a backup digital audio recorder, a laptop with a separate audio interface, another mixing console.

The ART 83Way is great for helping record multitrack backups and giving you an extra way to direct signal from individual tracks to another location in a live venue.

Direct Boxes

Things are never certain when you run sound. You can (and should) plan for every possible detail.

Enter the direct box (DI), the ultimate save for when there’s an unexpected instrument or device that needs to connect to the system.

A guitar player who gets invited on stage as a guest but doesn’t have an amp to use. A keyboard player that brings out an extra surprise piece of gear that needs to be plugged in. Even someone who wants to hook up a laptop to play audio of some kind through the main PA. DI boxes are great gifts for any musician, sound engineer or venue owner to have on hand, just in case.

Gift Idea #1: Radial Pro48 Active Direct Box

I’m a huge fan of Radial DIs, and having a couple different varieties on them on hand is a game-changer!

First, the Pro48 is a reliable, durable active DI, which requires phantom power and covers passive instruments like guitars and basses without their own onboard powered preamps. Sometimes space isn’t available for an instrument amp on stage, or you have multiple guitars and basses needing to make an appearance. This handy DI makes connecting an instrument from the stage to mixer or stage box a breeze.

Gift Idea #2: Radial Pro D2 Stereo Passive Direct Box

If you know someone who is planning on running powered instruments and devices in their music setup — like keyboards, drum machines, and samplers, and DJ controllers that use 1/4" cables — a passive stereo direct box is a huge help and requires no additional power.

Performers will be able to run their equipment from the Pro D2 to a mixer much more easily and get signal sent to the proper monitoring source, eliminating the need for extra amps. As an added bonus, you can either run one device in stereo, or two separate ones in mono!

Cables, Adapters, and Essentials

Do you know who could use more cables? Every single person working with live sound, that’s who! AMS is stocked with plenty of important cables. And they're a great and cost-effective gift for any live sound enthusiast on your list.

XLR cables that are 50+ feet long for speaker mains and subs, extra-long TRS 1/4” cables for outputs and sends on mixers with a small form-factor — from more of the standard essentials to a grab bag of different specialty cables, Y-cables, adapters, and couplers – these are so great to have in the toolkit.
