AMS Presents: Punch In with the Pros

The concept is simple: Find a Pro, play them a song they’ve never heard before, and let them “Punch In” their own part. What do you get? Some amazing collaborations that you’d never find out in the wild. This is Punch In with the Pros, and you’ll only find it right here at American Musical Supply!

Jared James Nichols Punches In on "Open My Eyes" by Rival Sons

One pickup and the truth: That's all Jared James Nichols needs to tear a bluesy solo on any track — no pick required. To put his skills to the test, we asked JJN to visit the AMS Studios and put his stamp on a Rival Sons song. Spoilers: He doesn't even need to listen to the song first before laying down a ridiculous guitar part that'll make you want to scream "Blues Power!" Check out this blues-tastic episode of "Punch In with the Pros" featuring Jared James Nichols, right here at American Musical Supply.

Mark Lettieri Punches In on "Out In the Middle" by Zac Brown Band

How can you stump a guitarist as good as Mark Lettieri? You force him out of his cozy jazz/rock/fusion world and into the down and dirty world of country music! For this epsiode of "Punch In with the Pros," we asked Mark to add his own flare to "Out In the Middle" by the Zac Brown Band. But of course, we removed the original guitar part first. Can Mark chart a Zac Brown song and rip a country solo? Let's find out on this episode of "Punch In with the Pros" featuring Mark Lettieri right here at AMS.

Jack Gardiner Punches In on "Powerslave" by Iron Maiden

YouTube sensation Jack Gardiner made his way across the pond to play a little game we like to call "Punch In with the Pros." We played him a section from "Powerslave" by Iron Maiden, sans guitar solo, and asked him to come up with his own part. As you might expect, he absolutely didn't disappoint. He laid down such a ridiculous solo that many of us started to think about our own guitar playing abilities — and perhaps headed over to Jack's YouTube Channel for some lessons. If you're looking for a tappin' musical good time, you definitely want to take a listen to Jack Gardiner's "Punch In with the Pros" right here at AMS.

Charles Berthoud Punches In on "Nothingness" by Living Colour

You know Charles Berthoud: YouTube sensation, ridiculous two-hand-tapping bassist, Berklee grad. Well, did you know we invited him to our studio to “Punch In” and add his own bass line to Living Colour’s “Nothingness”? Because you do now! And it’s NOT an easy song to play, putting Berthoud’s "jazz skills" to the test. Check out this episode of Punch In With the Pros — that may or may not include commentary from Living Colour’s own Doug Wimbish… It’s one that you definitely won’t want to miss!

Steve Morse Punches In on "Fix You" by Coldplay

What happens when a rocker plays on a soothing pop track? We didn't know either! And that's why we called in legendary guitarist Steve Morse — you know, from Deep Purple, Kansas, Dixie Dregs, and like a thousand other projects. He came into the studio to lay down his own take on Coldplay's "Fix You." Not only does it sound incredible, but it's also an absolute masterclass on how to use the guitar to its full, musical potential. You'll definitely want to listen to this episode of AMS's "Punch In with the Pros."

Nathan East Punches In on “Ghost” by Big Wreck

Nathan East is one of the most recorded bass players of all time — and for good reason. He’s amazing! He’s credited on over 2,000 songs, but now that number is officially 2,001 after we asked him to come up with his own bass part for Big Wreck’s song “Ghost.” Check out what he comes up with in this episode of AMS’s “Punch In with the Pros.”
